Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola, Falcarragh 3-9 St. Ronan’s Lurgan 1-11
Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola from Falcarragh took control of this Dankse Bank McDevitt Cup final in Owenbeg during the opening half and then were well-enough organised defensively to withstand the spirited fight-back that came from St Ronan’s College Lurgan.
The Donegal side’s midfielder Carlos O’Reilly scored goals in the 13th and 19th minute and that helped them build up an interval advantage of 3-6 to 0-5, a gap that certainly helped them when the Lurgan defence shut further scoring out during the second half and mounted a comeback.
However An Phobalscoil’s defence was solid as well, with Ciaran Coll bringing off several saves and demanding more out of his backs, while the excellent O’Reilly continually dropped back to work ball slowly out of the danger area.
St Ronan’s stand-out player was Ciaran Skelton who moved to central defence to allow Liam Russell the latitude to move forward and take scores, with probably the best support coming from Oisin McAliskey.
St Ronan’s didn’t play poorly during the opening half – just that Falcarragh managed to break them down for goals, and their responses in the form of single points didn’t eat enough into the lead.
Blake McGarvey added a third goal to O’Reilly’s pair and they really were in control going into the second half.
However early points from Liam Russell and Niall Greene were followed by a goal from Greene in the 46th minute, and suddenly it looked like game on.
Subsitute Owen Toye though conjured up a rare point for the Donegal boys and, despite further points from Oisin McAliskey, sub Fintan Duffy and Callum McGibbon, they were relatively comfortable waiting for referee Alan Nash’s final whistle.
