Mageean Cup talk by Seamus McAleenan

December 07, 2023

Five former Mageean Cup captains attended Wednesday evening’s talk on the history of the competition by Seamus McAleenan in St Louis Ballymena. The last man to lift the trophy, Aodhan McGarry of last year’s winners St Louis, back to former Antrim Hurling Board secretary Frank Smyth were accompanied by the McCamphill brothers from Dunloy, Seamus and Fr PJ, while Mickey Collins of St Pat’s Maghera was there two.

Seamus went through the history of hurling in Ulster schools from the early days in the 1950s, through the introduction of the Mageean Cup in 1963, up until the present day, while showing a wide selection of photographs on the large screen.

Overall a highly enjoyable evening and great thanks must go to Seamus McAleenan, to St Louis Grammar for hosting the event, event sponsors Dankse Bank and to Sean McGourty who gave a great introduction, and whose brilliant work for Ulster Colleges hurling knows no bounds.
