Lumen Lift Nannery Cup
December 18, 2019Danske Bank Nannery Cup final
Lumen Christi Derry 3-2 Inver College Carrickmacross 0-2
THE turning point in this Danske Bank Nannery Cup final yesterday in wet and windy Garvaghey came in the 35th minute when Conor McHugh stood over a penalty kick.
The Inver centre-forward struck the spot-kick well but the ball came off the post and Lumen Christi worked the ball outfield quickly. Eventually Flionn McLaughlin got on the end of the move to score his second goal.
In a low-scoring game dominated by the elements it was a crucial score for Lumen who had the breeze behind them and their defence held Inver scoreless for the rest of the game.
Lumen had big performances from Adam Devine and Cillian Doherty in defence particularly during the opening half, Eoin Canavan and player of the match Flionn McLaughlin at midfield, while Mark Chester, Ethan McClelland and Cathal Deery worked hard up front.
Inver tried hard throughout, but the writing was probably on the wall for them at the break when they trailed by 1-0 to two points from Conor McHugh after having used the strong wind.
McHugh was excellent for them, so too Aaron Woods who moved from full-back to midfield for the second half, Killian Kindlon-Smith and Darren Finnegan.
Flionn McLaughlin had registered the only goal of the opening half and when he added the second after that break following the penalty, Lumen were in control.
Their other midfielder Eoin Canavan’s goal around the 50 minute mark killed off the game. But credit to both sets of players who made the game so competitive in atrocious playing conditions.
