February 08, 2017Danske Bank Corn Mac Neasa final
St Catherine’s Armagh 7-10 St Colmcille’s Crossgar 2-9
Despite a slow start, St Catherine’s Armagh pulled away easily in St Paul’s Lurgan yesterday to win their first boys’ GAA title, the Danske Bank Corn Mac Neasa.
St Catherine’s is essentially a girls’ school that take boys only into the Gaelscoil stream and, while they have participated in football at most levels in recent years, this is their first Ulster title.
And they got off to an uncertain start with St Colmcille’s Crossgar scoring 1-1 inside the opening three minutes of play, the goal from the boot of the impressive Oisin Savage.
However St Catherine’s settled with Diarmuid Hennefin, Harry Comiskey and Oisin Green playing prominent roles and by half-time they were in charge on a 3-6 to 1-6 score-line.
Sean Fields scored two of their goals with Odhrán Lavery’s pile-driver sandwiched between.
Savage and Oisin Mulholland tried to rally the East Down side in the third quarter, Savage with three points and David Graham with a goal in the 44th minute.
However the Armagh Gaelgeoirí were well in command with both Fields and Lavery completing their hat-trick of goals and Diarmuid Hennefin adding a seventh late in the game.
