Third quarter crucial in St Ronan’s 2nd MacRory win

St Ronan’s Lurgan 2-9 Omagh CBS 0-7
Dominance of the third quarter translated into another brace of league points for St Ronan’s Lurgan in this keenly contested Danske Bank MacRory Cup tie in Pearse Óg Park Armagh yesterday.
The teams were level at the break on 0-4 each after a defensive enough first half in which clear scoring opportunities were scarce.
Free-taker James Garrity posted two of Omagh’s points while the pick of St Ronan’s scores was a fine point from Josh Megoran.
However Lurgan upped the pace on the re-start with points from Jack Lenehan and Rioghan Meehan before Josh Megoran was on hand in the 39th minute to punch to the net after Ciaran Kelly’s initial effort had rebounded off the crossbar.
Tiarnan Kelly pointed soon after and, in a tight game such as this, a lead of six points at the three-quarter stage was enough to see St Ronan’s over the line.
James Garrity eventually pulled back a point for Omagh with a free in the 48th minute and both teams added two points each before Lurgan broke as Omagh pushed forward.
Josh Megoran laid off to Patrick McGibbon who had options either side but had the confidence to crack home from 20 metres.
That leaves the Lurgan side top of the group with two wins from two starts, St Patrick’s Armagh on one win and Omagh and Castlewellan on a point each after their first round draw.
